FRONTIER PATHFINDER TITAN XTERRA PATROL

Robust and reliable Nissan trucks and SUVs have gained a wide following in the overland community. Thanks to the optimal combination of 4×4 capabilities, spacious interiors, reliable engines, and reasonable prices, they’ve become favorites among those seeking to venture off the beaten path.

Throughout the years, we have featured many overland builds based on various Nissan 4×4 models, starting from the good old Nissan Xterra to the globally renowned overland icon Nissan Patrol. On this page, you will find them all to get inspired for your own project and get more information about the parts used by their owners.

Frontier

Thanks to better payload capacity and the cargo space offered by the truck bed, the Frontier may be an even better option for your overland build than a midsize SUV such as the R51 Pathfinder, as it offers more options to organize your kitchen and storage setup. With the available Titan swap, a D40 Frontier can be modified to run up to 35″ tires, which significantly boosts its 4×4 capabilities.

Pathfinder

Like the Xterra, the R51 Pathfinder offers a solid list of off-road features like low-range gearing, available rear locker, and reliable 4.0L engines. With the help of a Titan swap, you can gain another few inches of ground clearance, widen the tracks, and run up to 35″ tires. Unlike the Xterra, it gives you more room to take more cargo on board and arrange a more convenient overland setup.

Titan

Those who want to load more gear on board definitely need to consider a Nissan Titan as the platform for their ultimate overland build. Just like other full-size trucks, it does everything on a larger scale. It tackles holes and has sufficient performance to take you off the paved roads with peace of mind. The Pro-4X version is equipped with a rear locker, improved suspension, and enough space in the wheel arches to instal 35-inch tires without serious modifications.

Xterra

As the name suggests, this midsize body-on-frame SUV is designed to be used on extreme terrains and will be a perfect companion for those looking to engage in overlanding. Due to the limited size and cargo area, it may not be the best choice for a family overlander, but it offers enough space for big adventures if you travel solo or as a couple. Thanks to the low range, rear lockers (in Pro-4X version), and decent ground clearance, it offers solid off-road capability which you can further extend with aftermarket upgrades. One of the most popular is the Titan swap, which allows you to utilize bigger and more rugged components from its full-size truck brother to run larger tires and gain a few extra inches of lift.

Patrol

The globally available Nissan Patrol is the ultimate choice for an off-road expedition project. Like its closest competitor, the Toyota Land Cruiser, it has the perfect combination of everything one may need to build a serious overland rig.
Being a robust full-size 4×4 SUV built with quality and durability in mind, it has gained a huge following all over the world. Even though early models such as the Y60 and Y61 were not available in the States at all, the Y62 Patrol in a slightly simplified form was available to American consumers under the name Armada (2nd gen).
