Dakar Inspired VW Amarok Off-road Rally Raid Build with Euro-style “Tuning”
When most people picture off-road racing, they picture prerunners and trophy trucks blasting through the California and Mexico desert — because that’s the kind of terrain the American off-road racing scene was built around. European racing grew out of a completely different tradition and a completely different landscape. North Africa, is their Baja and a place where European 4×4 fans have long tested their vehicles and gone exploring. Their scene is massively influenced by the famous Dakar race that originated in 1978 and defined an entire school of performance 4×4 (take the Pajero Evolution, for example).
The Volkswagen Amarok off-road build I’m featuring today is basically the European variation of a desert racing truck, built on Dakar racing traditions. Owner Stefano Begazo took a stock 2020 Amarok V6 and turned it into a purpose-built rally raid truck, somehow keeping it road legal. Read on to find out how it compares to common American pre-runners and general-purpose off-road builds.

While traditional American off-road builds often feature massive lifts, heavily oversized tires, and long-travel suspension (especially in the case of prerunners and trophy trucks) this Amarok looks and feels much more modest.
When you look at it, it feels like something between a stock truck and a prerunner build – the wheels look kind of small, the lift is only a few inches tall, and the fender work is way less radical. But none of that is the result of compromise, because the truck is simply built to serve a different purpose – rally raid, a common European off-road racing discipline!
Like prerunners, rally raid trucks are engineered for high-speed racing, but they also mix-in twisty, rally-style gravel roads where super-soft long-travel suspension would do more harm than good. That’s why rally raid trucks need to balance damping with optimal suspension stiffness and cornering.
The Dakar Rally, a multi-day endurance race, popularized this style back in the ’80s and still heavily influences today’s off-road scene in Europe – that’s why we see so many builds from that part of the world built on its formula.
At its core, the Amarok is a legit four-wheel-drive pickup that comes standard with low-range gearing and a rear differential lock, factory 4×4 tech already puts it ahead of most mid-size pickups off-road. It’s also body-on-frame, which gives it the structural base to handle the abuse of high-speed rally stages far better than a unibody crossover ever could. Stefano didn’t go the overland or rock-crawler route with this build – he went all in on rally raid, chasing a truck that can jump whoops like a prerunner and still carve a corner like a rally car.
Suspension & Traction

California prerunners typically prioritize huge wheel travel (often 18 to 24-plus inches in the front and up to 30 inches in the rear) and massive tires to skim over 3-foot-deep desert whoops at 80 mph. That usually requires much more radical long-travel suspension systems, with A-arms or I-beams and giant bypass shocks.
This Amarok, on the other hand, runs a more refined wide-track rally kit which gives it “modest” by prerunner standards, +2″ of track width and +2″ of wheel travel. It’s based on Baratec by Fuchs Stage 3 coilovers, 3-way adjustable with internal hydraulic bump stops and nitrogen-cooled reservoirs.

Instead of chasing extreme suspension travel, it relies on hydraulic bump stops and nitrogen reservoirs to control high-speed impacts on gravel, dirt trails, and washboard while keeping factory-like suspension architecture and geometry intact.
Behind the widening kit sits a set of Muelles Mods springs and Fuchs control arms – trapezoidal links designed to keep the geometry correct through the extra width and travel.
Wheels, Tires & Brakes

Filling the wheel wells with heavily oversized tires would eat into wheel travel, damage the fenders, and simply wouldn’t clear properly on this setup. That’s why Stefano kept tire size within a safe limit of 30 inches and focused on maximizing tread traction. His choice fell on professional-grade Mickey Thompson Baja Legend EXT tires, wrapped around Dakar Rally-inspired Braid Beadlock B wheels with real beadlocks (a pure necessity considering how hard the truck gets driven in the rally sections).
Braking hard and often into tight rally corners at speed puts a lot more heat into the system than most street pickups would ever see. That’s why the brakes got upgraded too with a set of slotted EBD rotors, which help dissipate heat, paired with Brembo pads for sports-car-like bite.
Differential Lock
On the traction side, the factory rear differential lock is joined by a front ARB Air Locker, stepping this Amarok up into the elite league of fully locked 4x4s. Running an air locker required installing onboard air compressor, which was sourced from ARB. The air lines were relocated back to the rear bumper to prevent damage and provide easy reach when the truck is parked up for service between stages.
VW Amarok Off-road Tuning & Drivetrain
The majority of SoCal prerunners are equipped with high-displacement V8s, often LS swaps, and many even rely on rear-wheel drive to simplify front-end modifications.
Being a common Euro work pickup, this Amarok instead comes with its factory 3.0L V6 Turbo Diesel, enhanced with a Stage 2 engine tune and a Stage 2 transmission tune, both focused on low-end torque rather than outright peak power.

Its internals are further protected by an oil accumulator, which ensures optimal lubrication under super-hard cornering (a common trick borrowed from track and drift cars). Without it, high lateral forces push oil away from the pickup tube, causing the pump to pull in air instead of liquid, which starves the internals of lubrication and can lead to overheating and damage.
A German heavy-duty transfer case was fitted to handle the extra torque and the abuse of repeated hard launches out of corners, and a ScanGauge with real-time monitoring keeps an eye on the vitals like boost, EGT, transmission temp (so nothing gets cooked mid-stage). A Pedal Commander was also added to sharpen throttle response, which matters more than it sounds like on a diesel that’s being driven like a rally car.
Protection & Exterior
To comply with strict European road standards, the tires that stuck out past the body line had to be covered up, so a full custom wide-body kit was designed to address that. Not as bold as the American prerunners, but it makes the Amarok look more muscular, starting to resemble the performance Golf R with its bulging body lines.
To maximize the approach angle and avoid damage from whoops and jumps, the factory front bumper was ditched in favor of a low-profile tubular bumper with a skid plate and tow points – a detail pretty much identical to what you’d find on the US prerunners we’re used to seeing on this side of the “big beautiful ocean”.
Up on the back you’ll find the same style of tubular rear bumper, also with tow points, to top it off. Underneath, an engine and radiator skid plate and a separate transmission skid plate to protect them from rocks and hard landings.

It’s also worth noting the Kevlar kit covers all the mudflaps and fender liners around the truck, which isn’t something you typically find on American 4x4s. It’s a super light and durable material that shields against rocks and debris thrown up by the wheels.
Out back, the bed’s been reworked with a Roll & Cage bed cover, a relocated spare tire, and a modified rear bed section to clear up space and keep weight down low and centered.
Lighting
Rally raid means stages that run into the dark, and the Amarok’s lighting package is built around that. A pair of Baja Designs OnX S8 lights handle long-range visibility at speed, a pair of Squadron Race lights fill in the wide-angle spread for tighter, twistier sections, and a pair of S2 lights round things out for closer work. Between the three, the truck’s covered for everything from a fast straight to a technical, rutted corner in the middle of the night.
Interior & Electronics

Inside, the truck remained nearly stock and all the subtle mods lean toward keeping the driver informed and connected. An Icom hands-free radio handles rally-style communication between the crew, while a CarPlay-enabled sound system with Focal components, amplifiers, and subwoofers takes care of everything else.
Out back, a bed-mounted outlet and charger kit plus an ARB power kit for a cooler or fridge mean the truck can support itself and its crew between stages without depending on the nearest gas station.

So all-in, this build runs roughly $33,500 on the low end to $60,000+ fully built out with a shop doing the labor – the coilover/wide-track system and the custom widebody kit are what really move the needle; everything else is comparatively modest.

If you own one of these trucks and want to prepare it for high-speed off-road racing (make it jump whoops like a prerunner and corner like a rally car), yet keep it your daily – this is the ultimate setup.
Yes, it looks different from an American prerunner, less spectacular at first glance, but it’s an ultimate sport tool rather than a looker. What it represents is the difference between two philosophies – this is the Dakar-inspired school, built around chassis control, factory-close geometry, and durability over stages that can run for days, rather than outright suspension travel and straight-line speed.
The trade-off is that none of this comes cheap or easy. But for a truck that still has to drive home on the road after spirited driving session, that’s the price of staying this close to factory.
