Lifted VW Golf Alltrack Wagon Off-road Build on Oversized Tires

Lifted VW Golf Alltrack Wagon Off-road Build on 30 inch Tires

Thanks to experimenting with vehicle designs and merging bodystyles, big car brands sometimes offer pretty interesting models. I’m talking about those found on the edge of two segments like this VW Golf Alltrack – an interesting fusion of a basic wagon with the drivetrain, ground clearance, and AWD capabilities of a crossover. All in all, it’s a more rugged, all-wheel-drive wagon based on the Golf SportWagen, featuring a slightly raised suspension, plastic body cladding, and an exclusive “Off-Road mode” that gives it more capability than your average grocery-getter.

As you see from the photos, the owner of this lifted VW Golf Alltrack decided to go even further in merging the boundaries between this car and a Tiguan crossover by installing a couple of impactful modifications that boosted up its off-road capabilities. The moment I stumbled upon @mk7alltrack’s build on Instagram, I realized that this is exactly the type of project that deserves a feature – a practical daily driver that can easily take you off pavement on a weekend trip. Read on to find out more about how he transformed this unassuming wagon into a fun adventure car!

Key Modifications:

  • B2bfab 1.5″ lift kit with 2″ rear strut extenders
  • 225/55R17 Michelin Latitude Cross All-Terrain Tires
  • Strands Lighting Division LED light setup (688w total)

What you’re about to see is a daily driver that actually works as an off-road tool. No compromises. No pretending. Just a guy from southern Sweden who moved north and figured out exactly what he needed. Let’s dive into how he pulled it off.

The build

First of all, it’s a Euro-spec model which serves his owner as a reliable daily and commuter in beautiful and cold country of Sweden.

Like the majority cars in this part of the world, this Golf is powered by a disel engine. But this 2.0 TDI has way more to offer the driver thanks to the TMC Stage 1 tune bringing output to 220hp and 455Nm of torque – a nice bump from the stock 184hp. In addition to that, it’s outfitted with a new intake from Revdop and Friedrich Motorsport 3″ axle-back exhaust gives which makes it sound much nicer.

Off-Road Stuff

Suspension is where things get even more interesting. Unlike it’s stance brothers, this MK7 is fitted with a B2bfab 1.5″ lift kit and 2″ strut extenders in the rear, which significantly improves the ground clearance, along with the so much important approach and departure angles.

Added space in the wheel wells freed up some more space for larger wheels. Here, the owner went with a smart dual setup – 17×8″ Sparco Tarmac wheels wrapped in 225/55R17 Michelin Latitude Cross tires for summer use, and 17×7.5″ Dotz Freeride Peak wheels with studded Goodyear Ultragrip Ice Arctic tires for winter. The overall diameter of this tire is 26.5″, which equals to the wheels installed on a Subaru Crosstrek allowing this Golf Wagon to play on the CUV territory.

One of the biggest and most impactful upgrades on the exterior is the massive set of Rally-style driving lights, which brings up the memories of Race-spec Subaru Impreza builds that were dominating the charts in the late 90s – early 2000s.

Owner’s Insight

1. How did you get into offroading?

– It started when I moved 900 km north from my hometown in southern Sweden. I knew right away that the lowered Mk6 GTI I had at the time wouldn’t work. Figured the only way was up—and it took off from there, driving places I never could have reached before.

2. Why did you choose such an uncommon platform for your project?

– VW has always been my thing. I needed something I could daily, not too expensive, with AWD, fairly new, and with a big boot since a dog joined the family (and later a little human). Plus, it’s fun to be unique. I see Alltracks every day, but I bet I’ll never see another one with a lift kit in this country.

3. What was the most difficult part of the build?

– Having my go-to mechanic 900 km away—lol. I don’t like to do suspension work or such myself, and I wish that were different. Honestly, I can’t really say anything has been that difficult. It’s maybe more difficult to evolve from here then up to here.

4. What do you love the most about your wagon?

– The reliability, the overall look I’ve achieved so far, and the fact that it’s actually a really fun car both on and off road.

Side note: I am super thankfull for my sponsors/collabs believeing in me and keep supporting me and my build. Wouldn’t be here without them.
