With the Land Cruiser 250 being the biggest hit on the market of 4×4 SUVs during the last year, we knew it wouldn’t take much time for the new owners to start modifying them for off-roading. As soon as they were released, the internet became flooded with numerous render dry-fitting oversized M/Ts, and common off-road/overland equipment, which made it obvious that 250 is built just for that.

Once I stumbled upon Luigi’s lifted 2024 LC 250 overland project, I immediately realized that it’s a perfect candidate for the very first build feature on Offroadium dedicated to this new-gen Land Cruiser. It’s got a pretty extensive list of legit off-road modifications to unleash the real off-road capabilities of this model and make it a comfrtable and dependable rig for big and small expeditions. Read on to find the recipe of a proper Land Cruiser 250 overland build!

Top-3 mods:

  1. Dobinsons MRR Extended Travel Suspension
  2. 37″ Nitto Trail Grapplers
  3. JBA Off-road Upper Control Arms (UCAs)

Suspension

Luigi went all-out with the suspension setup, starting with Dobinsons MRR Extended Travel coilovers that deliver serious wheel travel and articulation. The JBA Off-road UCAs are crucial here – they maintain proper suspension geometry with the added lift and prevent binding during extended travel.

Perry Parts front bump stops and Duro Bumps 4-inch rear bump stops handle compression events progressively, while the Dr KDSS B.O.T.C.K (Bump-stop Override Trigger Control Kit) gives manual control over Toyota’s KDSS system that normally limits suspension travel. Victory 4×4 rear shock mount skids protect the vulnerable mounting points from rock strikes.

Wheels & Tires

The massive 37×12.5R17 Nitto Trail Grapplers are the star of the show here. Mounted on TIS 17×9 wheels with -12mm offset, they transform the capability and stance of this LC250 greatly. The oversized rubber boosts ground clearance and break-over angles while the negative offset widens the track for better stability. The tall sidewalls let Luigi air down safely for better traction and provide extra protection against punctures on sharp rocks.

Exterior

Catuned Off-road supplied the armor package with their front bumper and rock sliders, joined by an OK Expedition engine skid plate for comprehensive undercarriage protection. The bumper improves approach angles and houses the Warn VR 12-S EVO winch. Up top, the Uptop Overland roof rack carries the Mars Adventure Aeroblade RTT and Kammok Crosswing awning for camping gear.

Lights

Three Baja Designs units handle the lighting duties. The LP6 provides the main beam pattern for high-speed trail running, while the Squadron Sport and S2 Sport units add targeted illumination for technical sections and camp work. All three use Baja’s military-grade construction that handles constant vibration and impacts without missing a beat.

Other

The build’s finishing touches include an AFE Cold Air Intake for better airflow, R1 Concepts brakes sized for the heavier 37-inch tires, and Catuned’s on-board air system for trail-side tire pressure adjustments. The Agency 6 winch shackle ensures safe recovery operations with the 12,000-pound Warn winch. Inside, Catuned’s upper multipurpose shelf and Uptop’s window molle panels organize gear, while the Garmin PowerSwitch manages electrical accessories.

Interview with the Owner

Toyota Land Cruiser 250 with a 4" lift and 37" tires

Why did you choose an LC250 for your off-road project?

– Main driving force was owning a 22 Tundra that was built out as well. I was part of that that massive engine recall, and long story short, trading it in for an LC250 just made sense.

How does it compare to other vehicles you’ve driven off-road?

– Coming from a 22 Tundra, drivability off-road is night and day. Much easier on narrower, tighter areas. With the Tundra, always had to plan out where we were going, trail conditions, etc just due to its stature.

What was the most difficult part of the build?

– Most difficult – waiting for parts to be available. The waiting game. The aftermarket support this is catching up.

What do you like the most about your LC250?

– For me, the boxy design, aesthetics of the vehicle and as much negative feedback about Toyota going to a 4-cylinder turbo hybrid platform, it really doesn’t struggle with the current build with at much low end torque it has. Definitely fun to drive.

Conclusion

Luigi nailed the recipe for building a serious LC250 that handles everything from tight technical trails to long desert runs. The Dobinsons suspension and 37-inch Nittos give it legitimate trail capability, while the comprehensive armor package means it can take the punishment that comes with real off-road use.

This build scores 60 out of 70 points on our capability scale – proving that with the right mods, Toyota’s newest 4×4 platform follows the ground principles of the old-school Land Cruiser.
