Military Green Mercedes G280 GE W460 classic 4×4 G-wagen
Even though the majority of our latest features on Offroadium.com are dedicated to modern trucks, SUVs, and crossovers, we just can’t resist highlighting the 4×4 legends of the past.
This particular example of a first-generation Mercedes G-Wagen we’re featuring today has continued to serve its purpose for more than 40 years, allowing its owner, Sean Craig, to explore the beautiful backcountry of New Zealand and enjoy off-road adventures in an old-school way.
Key Takeaways
- This first-gen Mercedes W460 G-Wagen is still an impressivley capable 4×4 after 40+ years since production
- The owner kept it mostly stock, preserving original look while improving it’s off-road capabilities
- Rooftop tent and awning added for convenient camping setup
If you’re into off-roading, then a Mercedes G-Class needs no introduction. In a few words, we can say that being designed in the late 70s as a utilitarian 4×4 vehicle for military and agricultural needs, it’s tailored for off-road abuse and features some of the best off-road capabilities you can find in vehicles to this day.
Thanks to its durable chassis, front, center, and rear locking differentials, short overhangs, and decent ground clearance, it can confidently compete with the majority of modern, dedicated off-road SUVs.

ToggleThe Build
This military green G-Class is one of the early 280GE models of the W460 body style. Unlike many trail rigs, it has remained relatively stock with the addition of small and subtle accessories that improve the vehicle’s capabilities on rough terrain, allowing the owner to preserve the original look and feel of the early G-Class.
Tires
Wheels and tires mean a lot for any vehicle used off paved roads. Even though Sean decided to keep the original steelies, the tires were upgraded with modern rubber to improve traction when things get slippery. He chose 235/85/16 Yokohama Geolandar M/T tires that equal almost 32″ in overall diameter, which is a noticeable upgrade over the 235/75R16 30″ factory tire size.
Off-road & Recovery
An A-pillar mounted snorkel allows for deep water crossings without the risk of damaging the engine and getting stranded in the middle of nowhere.
No matter how well your 4×4 is equipped for off-roading, sometimes you just can’t avoid getting stuck completely. That’s why Sean utilizes a winch hidden in the front bumper, which is a basic necessity for solo trips.
Lights
Obviously, the original round lights from the ’70s don’t provide sufficient light output according to modern standards, which is even more noticeable when driving in complete darkness. To address that and gain an additional light source on the trails, Sean decided to install a long 40-inch single-row LED light bar mounted on top of the windshield. Despite its modern design, it blends in perfectly with the boxy design of the G-Wagen.
Overlanding Gear
Instead of camping on the ground or rearranging the interior space for a sleeping platform inside his rig, Sean decided to install an easy-to-set-up hard shell rooftop tent made by Alu-Cab. This tried-and-tested solution helps set up a camping spot much faster without any hassle and the need to pack and unpack bulky gear that takes up space inside.
In addition to the rooftop tent, a large 270° batwing-style awning provides shelter from the sun and rain during camping.
