The Toyota LC200 has always been a dream truck for Alex, from San Diego, CA and one day this dream finally came true. After buying it, he didn’t settle with stock and decided to modify it to suit his requirements even better and outfit it with some must-have parts and gear.

This beefy-looking Toyota Land Cruiser 200 sits on a set of 33” General tire ATX off-road tires (285/70R17) to ensure optimal traction on local trails. King 2.5 shocks were installed to slightly lift the truck and optimize the suspension operation.

The stylish and functional Rhino 4×4 winch-mount off-road bumper was imported all the way from Argentina and it perfectly suited the face-lifted front end of the LC200. SleeBuilt skid plates and armor protect the vital drive-train and suspension components underneath.

Why Land Cruiser 200 is One of The Best Overland Platforms

After logging thousands of miles on some of the country’s toughest trails, I can attest that comfort is hugely important for enduring long off-road adventures. Of course, the wind in your hair and the driving-involvement from hearing the engine sound and suspension squeak puts a smile on any gearhead’s face. However, after bouncing down rough trails for 4+ hours, the noises, heat, wind, and other rigors of a spartan 4×4 take their toll. You start longing for relief.

The developers of the Land Cruisers understand this well. The 200-Series strikes an ideal balance —wrapping drivers and passengers in comfort, convenience and insulation from the harshness outside, while retaining impressive off-road capabilities. Believe me, a 10-hour trail-drive over backcountry roads is a vastly different experience between a rugged Jeep and the luxurious Land Cruiser.

Here are some of the key reasons that make the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 an excellent choice as a long distance overlanding vehicle:

  • Reliability – Toyota’s are renowned for their durability, dependability, and ruggedness. With proper maintenance, the Land Cruiser’s proven drivetrain can easily accumulate hundreds of thousands of miles, critical for remote expeditions.
  • Comfort – The LC200 provides a spacious, quiet, and comfortable cabin. Important on long overland trips, whether cruising paved highways or crawling rough terrain.
  • Off-Road Capability – With full-time 4WD, a dual-range transfer case, center differential lock, and advanced traction aids like A-TRAC, the LC200 can traverse extremely tough terrain when needed.
  • Load Carrying – The Land Cruiser platform offers plenty of space for gear/supplies and custom storage solutions. Combined with excellent towing capabilities, it’s ideal for extended trips off the grid.
  • Self-Sufficiency – Between large fuel capacity, dual batteries, and available lockers/crawlers, the LC200 has the hardware for high autonomy in the wilderness. Reliability also minimizes breakdown risks in remote areas.
  • Build Quality – Tank-like construction, heavy-duty components, and thoughtful engineering make this luxury SUV uniquely up to the rigors of world travel. It takes whatever abuse the road throws at it in stride.

So if planning to drive across continents, through jungles or deserts, and off the beaten path, few vehicles match the Land Cruiser 200’s supreme blend of toughness, space, reliability and trails mastery like this legendary Toyota overlanding rig.

How we test?

Offroadium Verdict & Score Explained

We have created our own rating and classification system to differentiate and evaluate the off-road capabilities of vehicles showcased on Offroadium. Based on it, we can conclude the following:

Off-road Capability Score: 65/70

Being a full-time four wheel drive vehicle equipped with a suspension lift and 33” all-terrain tires it received +30 points per our classification. Add body-on-frame layout (+5 Points), low range (+10 points), center locking differential (+10 points), and steel body armor (+5 points), and extra 5 points for ATRAC and CRAWL electronic enhancements that substitute mechanical lockers, this lifted LC200 scores nearly perfect 65 out of 70 for off-road competence. Those looking to reach the 70/70 capability level in the most extreme environments may want to instal aftermarket ARB locking differential, but even without it, the LC200 performs like a champ.

The King shocks and General Grabber tires build on the already-impressive capabilities of Toyota’s flagship SUV to handle even the most demanding terrain. Center differential lock, crawler gearing, and advanced systems like A-TRAC further reinforce its prowess off the beaten path.

Complexity Level: Pro

Significant upgrades to major components like the suspension, drivetrain protection, and auxiliary lighting demonstrate this is far beyond an entry-level build. With a custom front bumper, roof rack, skid plates and quality aftermarket lift components, it’s clear no expense has been spared to optimize capabilities to suit the owner’s adventurous expeditions. We classify this Land Cruiser as a Professional level build.

Build Budget: $$$$$

Taking into the account the quality of parts used in this build (some parts were sourced overseas), we estimate this LC200 likely represents maximum $$$$$ level investment. Built for remote travel and enjoying nature rather than pavement princess status, it delivers an immense return on investment behind the wheel in rugged environments.

Pros

  • Legendary reliability and durability for going anywhere off-road
  • Fantastic off-road performance with ATRAC and CRAWL off-road mods

Cons

  • Poor fuel economy, especially when loaded down for expedition use
  • Can be expensive to purchase and maintain
